German-born artist and resident of Shelter Island, Christine Matthäi draws her inspiration from nature and her serene water reflection images in the Calm Before the Storm exhibit are inspired by the extraordinary light conditions of sea, sky and water on the East End of Long Island. Christine’s favored subject has always been the water in ponds, lakes and oceans and these works also pay tribute to the raw natural beauty of the Hamptons and the Bahamas. Matthäi’s fascination with photography began early as a teen and was followed by her education from the Fashion Institute of Technology in Berlin. Having moved to New York City, Matthäi has worked as a photographer’s assistant, photojournalist, and foreign correspondent for international magazines and newspapers. Her strong connections to the New York art scene stimulated and helped contribute to the exploration of her own artistic creativity and pursuit of fine art photography full time.
Born in Miami, raised in Brazil, and then moved to New York to study Art, interdisciplinary artist and musician Dalton Portella currently lives and works in Montauk on Long Island’s East End. Blending his expertise as a successful commercial artist with his artistic talent as a painter and photographer, Portella experiments with various mediums - from classic oil and watercolor to fusing photography with digital manipulation - creating works on traditional and non-traditional surfaces, and has exhibited his works extensively in East End and New York galleries. His works in the Calm Before the Storm exhibit are a photographic series depicting a modern take on the classic theme of maritime art. Using his library of ocean, sky and storm images, Portella synthesizes a new storm, two or more storms coming together to form a more powerful fictionalized storm, stunningly capturing the strength of nature and the fury of the sea.
